Earlier in the year I worked with Jisc to produce the Framework for digital transformation in higher education. This involved collaborating with a range of professional bodies to ensure that the framework reflected different perspectives and viewpoints. The framework provides a structure to help UK higher education (HE) providers to develop strategic vision and planning, fostering innovation, streamlining business processes and operations and developing partnerships for collaboration. The framework highlights how policies and processes might align to promote cross-team approaches that reduce complexity and fragmented processes.
Since then we have been working with a senior leaders working group to produce a toolkit made up of a digital maturity model and roadmap/action plan template. When identifying digital maturity across all areas of business HE providers need to benchmark themselves against the sector and set their own baseline from which to move forward. Defining digital maturity is an important step in producing a digital transformation strategy and creating actionable plans. The toolkit offers a range of materials to help organisations assess their levels of digital maturity, support the development of a digital strategy and turn strategic vision/s into action.
The toolkit is published as a Jisc guide called Digital transformation in higher education.
The framework covers all activities carried out in a higher education organisation so the materials are comprehensive. There is a large interactive pdf of the maturity model with an index that highlights which key areas are covered and navigational links to the relevant sections We have also split the maturity model and action guides into the six top level elements of the framework to make them easier to engage with and use across different departments and teams within a university.
The smaller focused maturity model documents are offered as pdfs and also as interactive work documents where people can select their maturity levels and also select their progress from another dropdown. The word documents allow people to create their own versions that reflect their own contexts.
